Grani is an ark created by the Monster Makers using a similar formula as Digimon. Initially a mode of transportation to return the tamers to Earth, it is eventually given a modified form as Gallantmon's steed.

Role

Although he was not named at this point, Grani was created as an ark by the Monster Makers, specifically Janyu and Dolphin, to return the tamers and their Digimon to Earth. When the ark arrived, everyone got on except Takato, Rika, Renamon, Impmon, Ryo, and Cyberdramon, who it seemed would be left behind. Guilmon told the ark to stop, and it did, continuing once Takato and the others got on. The D-Reaper attacked them as they made their way to Earth, but Takato told the ark to try to make it to Earth, and the ark did, though it was seemingly destroyed in the process.

However, the ark was not destroyed, but damaged, returning to the digital world, and sent a message to Yamaki on his com device. The Monster Makers modified the ark, giving it Chrome Digizoid armor and wings, and naming it Grani, after a mythic war horse. Shibumi used Henry's digivice to enable Grani to bio-emerge, but it was unable to at first, until Gallantmon, in his fight with Optimizer, somehow shot a ray of light at the digital field, allowing Grani to bio-emerge. This was because Gallantmon is a knight, and Grani acts as his noble steed. Riding Grani like a glider, Gallantmon was able to destroy Optimizer.

Riley and Daisy ran system checks on Grani to install new equipment in him, and saw recorded images of the battle with the D-Reaper in the digital world. Hypnos and the Monster Makers installed the Yuggoth program inside Grani, which he and Gallantmon used to destroy the D-Reaper's shield around its brain. When Beelzemon was nearly killed by the D-Reaper, Grani saved him from falling to his death.

Grani later participated in the final battle against the D-Reaper. When it seemed Gallantmon would be defeated, Grani sacrificed himself to give Gallantmon his wings, enabling him to turn Crimson Mode.

Trivia

• It is a common misconception that Grani is the ark that Takato, Henry, and Terriermon ride to the Land of the Sovereign after talking to Shibumi. This ark was destroyed on impact, and Grani was first created by the Monster Makers to take the tamers home.
